Huanchaco
We stayed in a small coastal village just outside Trujillo, called Huanchaco. We arrived in the evening, just as a fiesta for the patrón was kicking off. There were homemade fireworks and catherine wheels aplenty, a brass band, and lots of cerveza.

Huanchaco1 Huanchaco's main claim to fame is that it was home to the original surfers. Fishermen use the rafts shown in this photo to fish in the rich (thanks to the Humboldt current), deep seas off the coast. The rafts are made out of totora reeds, and are known as caballitos (little horses). They have quite an ancient history, and are depicted on pre-colombian ceramics.
Huanchaco2 Toni on the pier at Huanchaco, with the wild Pacific (an oxymoron?) crashing into the shore in the background.
