We arrived back in Reykjavik at 7:30pm, and checked into the same guest house (the Travel Inn). We then went out to explore 101 Reykjavik (i.e. the centre of town), and, as it was a Monday, found lots of near-empty bars. We saw the Alþing, the Icelandic parliament (Iceland has had a parliament since the 10th century), and had a tasty and beautifully served meal at the Humarhúsið fish restaurant.
The next day, we caught the bus to the Blue Lagoon, which is close to the airport. This is a huge pool of thermally-heated water. The water is extracted from the ground to power one of Iceland's geothermal power stations. It is well established on the tourist trail, and the volcanic mud is supposed to be good for the skin. After an hour and a half of swimming and soaking in the mineral-rich water, the bus came back to collect us, and we went to the airport. We picked up a bottle of Brennivin ("Black Death"), the national spirit drink, and caught the 16:20 flight back to Heathrow.
We packed quite a lot into our three and a half days in Iceland, but had a great time, and look forward to going back some day to do the full 5 day Landmannalaugar to Skógar trek.
